Chinese Government Scholarship programs sponsor international students, teachers and scholars to undertake degree studies (bachelor, master, and Ph.D.) and Chinese language study or academic research in institutions of higher education in China.

 Duration

Chinese Government Scholarship covers both major study and Chinese language (preparatory) study. The table below illustrates the duration of each program.

Instruction Language

1. Undergraduate scholarship recipients must register for Chinese-taught credit courses. They are required to take one-year preparatory courses in one of the 10 universities listed below and to pass the required test before moving on to their major studies.

Undergraduate scholarship recipients can apply for preparatory course exemption if they completed their secondary education in Chinese or have a valid HSK certificate that meets the requirements of the host university. Official documents from secondary schools or a photocopy of a valid HSK certificate must be submitted for a preparatory course exemption application. Please NOTE that HSK results are valid for only 2 years.

Entrusted by MOE, the following 10 universities offer preparatory courses to undergraduate scholarship recipients. They are Tianjin University, Nanjing Normal University, Shandong University, Central China Normal University, Tongji University, Beijing Language and Culture University, Northeast Normal University, Beijing International Studies University, Capital Normal University, and the University of International Business and Economics.

2. Graduate and non-degree Scholarship Students can Register for either the Chinese-taught program or the English-taught Program if Applicable.

Scholarship recipients of Chinese-taught programs without adequate Chinese proficiency must take Chinese language courses for one to two academic years to reach the language requirements of their host universities before moving on to their major studies. Failure to reach the required language proficiency will lead to the automatic termination of scholarship. Chinese language courses will be one year for majors in Science, Engineering, Agriculture, West Medicine, Economics, Management, Legal Studies and Fine Arts, and be no more than two years for majors in Literature, History, Philosophy and Chinese Medicine. Scholarship recipients of the English-taught programs or those with adequate Chinese language proficiency do not need to take Chinese language courses.

 Institutions and Majors
Now 289 Chinese universities have been designated to enroll international students with Chinese Government Scholarship, and they offer a wide variety of programs. Introduction to the universities and the programs they offer can be found in the Guide DOWNLOAD Now.

 Coverage and Standard

NOTE: Field of Study I includes Philosophy, Economics, Legal Studies, Education, Literature (Fine Arts excluded), History, and Management;  Field of Study II includes Science, Engineering, and Agriculture; Field of Study III includes Fine Arts and Medicine.

 Full Scholarship Covers

1. Tuition Waiver. Tuition funds will be comprehensively used by the host university. It may cover scholarship students’ education, administration costs, and expenditures to support student activities. Accommodation: free university dormitory or accommodation subsidy.

If the host university requires students to live on campus, the university will accommodate the scholarship students in a university dormitory (usually a twin room); if the host university permits students to live off campus, the university will provide monthly/quarterly accommodation subsidy:
2. Undergraduate students (preppies), master’s students(general scholars): CNY 700 per month;
3. Doctoral students (senior scholars): CNY 1000 per month.

 Stipend

• Undergraduate students: CNY 2,500 per month;
• Master’s students/general scholars: CNY 3,000 per month;
• Doctoral students/senior scholars: CNY 3,500 per month.

Within the scholarship duration, registered scholarship students will receive a stipend from their host university each month. Students registering on or before the 15thof the month will receive a full stipend of that month. Those who register after the 15thof the month will receive a half stipend of that month. Graduating students will receive a stipend until a half month after the graduation date. If the registered student stays out of China for more than 15 days due to a personal reason (school holidays excluded), his stipend will be stopped during his leave. Comprehensive medical insurance.

 Partial Scholarship Covers

One or some Items of the Full Scholarship. Bilateral Program includes a full or partial scholarship established by MOE in accordance with Educational exchange agreements or Consensus between the Chinese Government and Governments of other countries, Institutions, Universities or International organ.

 Eligibility

1. Applicants must be a citizen of a Country other than the People’s Republic of China, and be in good health.
2. The requirements for applicants’ degree and age are that applicants must:

• be a high school graduate under the age of 25 when applying for the undergraduate programs;
• be a bachelor’s degree holder under the age of 35 when applying for the master’s programs;
• be a master’s degree holder under the age of 40 when applying for the doctoral programs;
• be under the age of 45 and have a high school diploma (or higher) when applying for the general scholar programs;
• be a master’s degree holder or an associate professor (or above) under the age of 50 when applying for the senior scholar programs

 Application Documents (in duplicate) 

1. Application Form for Chinese Government Scholarship(written in Chinese or English);

2. Notarized highest diploma (photocopy); Prospective diploma recipients must submit an official document issued by your current school to prove your current student status or expected graduation date. Documents in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized Chinese or English translations.

3. Academic transcripts (written in Chinese or English); Transcripts in languages other than Chinese or English must be attached with notarized Chinese or English translations.

4. A Study Plan or Research Proposal (written in Chinese or English); This should be a minimum of 200 words for undergraduate students, 500 words for non-degree students, and 800 words for graduate students.

5. Two Recommendation Letters (written in Chinese or English); Applicants for the graduate programs or the senior scholar programs must submit two recommendation letters signed by professors or associate professors.

6. A CD of your own works (only required for art students); Applicants for music studies are requested to submit a CD of their own musical works. Applicants for the fine arts programs must submit a CD of their own works which include two sketches, two color paintings, and two other works.

7. Valid documents of your legal guardians in China (only required for applicants under the age of 18);

8. Foreigner Physical Examination Form The physical examinations must cover all of the items listed in the Foreigner Physical Examination Form. Incomplete forms or forms without the signature of the attending physician, or the official stamp of the hospital, or a sealed photograph of the applicant are considered as invalid. Please carefully plan your physical examination schedule as the result is valid for only 6 months.

9. The copy of Pre-admission Letter from designated Chinese university (if available);

10. The copy of HSK certificate (if available).

 Placement & Scholarship Confirmation 

1. Application documents of recommended candidates from dispatching authorities will be considered by CSC for eligibility and qualification. Ineligible or incomplete applications will not be considered.

2. Qualified applications will be sent to universities for placement. Based on various factors, such as the different scholarship funding requirements of every country, the host university’s teaching capacity, study length, and applicants’ criteria, CSC reserves the right to make necessary adjustments/changes to the candidate’s host university, a field of study, supporting categories and duration of the scholarship. Applications enclosed with the Pre-admission Letter will be sent to the universities who issued that Letter for placement confirmation.

3. After placement confirmation by Chinese universities, scholarship Recipients will get Chinese government scholarships to study in China with approval by CSC. Each scholarship recipient will be granted with no more than one scholarship.

4. CSC reviews the placement results, approves the List of Scholarship Recipients and sends the admission documents to the Chinese embassy or consulate-general before July 31^st. The Chinese embassy or consulate-general will send the admission documents (List of Scholarship Recipients, Admission Letter and Visa Application Form for Study in China (JW201)) to the dispatching authorities or scholarship recipients.

5. Scholarship recipients shall not allow changing their host university, a field of study, or duration of study stipulated in the Admission Letter after their coming to China.

6. A scholarship will not be reserved if the scholarship

2. Instruction Language
Undergraduate scholarship recipients must register for Chinese-taught credit courses. Graduate and non-degree scholarship students can register for either the Chinese-taught program or the English-taught program if applicable. 3. Duration
The scholarship Covers both major study and Chinese language (preparatory study).

4. Scholarship Coverage
The Bilateral Program provides both full scholarships and partial scholarships. Please refer to Introduction to CGS—Coverage and Standard for details of each item.

This scholarship only supports graduate students.

2. Duration:
This scholarship only supports master’s students for no more than 3 academic years or doctoral students for no more than 4 academic years. The scholarship covers both major study and Chinese language/preparatory study, as specified in the Admission Letter.

3. Instruction Language:
Scholarship students can register for either Chinese-taught program or English-taught program if applicable.

4. Scholarship Coverage:
The Chinese University Program provides a full scholarship which covers tuition waiver, accommodation, stipend, and comprehensive medical insurance.

1. Supporting Category:
This program only supports general scholars and senior scholars.

2. Duration:
This scholarship covers, in general, one academic year of study.

3. Language Instruction:
Scholarship recipients of Chinese-taught programs without adequate Chinese proficiency are required to get approval from both CSC and UNESCO for one academic year Chinese language study.

4. Scholarship Coverage:
The Great Wall Program provides a full scholarship which covers tuition waiver, accommodation, stipend, and comprehensive medical insurance.

1. Supporting Category:
This scholarship only supports graduate students.

2. Duration:
This scholarship supports master’s students for no more than 3 academic years or doctoral students for no more than 4 academic years. It covers the major study and Chinese language study.

3. Instruction Language:

4. Scholarship Coverage:
The AUN Program provides a full scholarship which covers, tuition waiver, accommodation, stipend, and comprehensive medical insurance.

1. Supporting Category:
This program supports undergraduate students, master students, and doctoral students.

2. Duration:
The scholarship covers both major study and Chinese language study, as specified in the Admission Letter. It supports undergraduates for no more than 5 academic years, master students for no more than 3 academic years, or doctoral students for no more than 4 academic years.

3. Instruction Language:
Undergraduate scholarship recipients must register for Chinese-taught credit courses. Students of Chinese-taught programs without adequate Chinese proficiency must take one-year Chinese language/preparatory study. Graduate students must register for English-taught credit courses.

4. Institutions:
The two designated universities for this program are Nanjing University of Information Science and Technology and Hohai University.

5. Majors:
The majors are limited to Meteorology, Hydrology and Water Resources Monitoring & Management.

6. Scholarship Coverage
This is a partial scholarship which covers a tuition waiver, accommodation, living expenses, and comprehensive medical insurance. Please refer to the introduction of CGS for details of each item.

MOFCOM Scholarship supports Master’s program for 2-3 years or Ph.D. program for 3-4 years. Scholarship winners must register for English-taught program if such program is available. When only Chinese-taught program is available, students should take Chinese language training courses for one to two years before moving on to their degree study.

 One-time round-trip international airfare for all the students (First time fly to China after enrollment, and Fly back to home country while graduation), and a maximum of “n-1” (“n” is for the length of schooling year which is set while the student was enrolled by the program) round-trip international airfares for home visits (one time per year set at the end of an academic year).
